The fruits of some tomato varieties tend to crack particularly
when it rains after an extended dry period. Apart from other
physiological mechanism involving moisture and fruit contents,
cracking mainly occurs because the fruit contents tend to absorb
more water and expands at a faster rate than the fruit wall (cuticle).
The cracked areas are avenues for bacterial and fungal pathogens
that cause fruit rots.
Plant resistant varieties, ensure plants get adequate moisture
during dry periods, maintain a high fruit load, avoid excessive
pruning of branches, and avoid condensation of water on the fruit
surface at night. |
