Is Your Financial Security at Risk?

Step 5: Compare Methods and Identify Gaps

Compare the recommended methods of handling your risks with the ways you are currently handling them, to identify

  • possible gaps in insurance coverage,
  • insurance coverages that may not be needed, and
  • any other "gaps" or "mismatches" in your current risk management strategies.

Notice the events for which the "Gaps" column is marked. This indicates that the method you are currently using to deal with that risk is different from the suggested method.

Even if you do not have a Gap for a particular event, you may still need to evaluate your strategy. For example, if you are insuring your death and that matches with the recommendation, you still need to determine whether you are carrying adequate insurance. You may also need to shop around for the best price for insurance or to evaluate your deductibles against your cash on hand.
