Peony
Paeonia hybrids

Peonies are reliable, long lived hardy herbaceous perennials with large showy blooms on plants growing to about 3 feet tall. They bloom from late spring to early summer. Peony prefers a full sun or very light shade site. The light shade helps to prevent fading of some of the lighter colored flowers. Peonies require a well-drained site, plenty of moisture during early spring growth and not too much fertilizer. Over fertilization results in reduced bloom. Other factors contributing to reduced flowering include too much shade, competition from tree roots and planting too deep. Use as a specimen plant in the border as a hedge or accent in front of shrubs. Many cultivars are available.
