Horticulture Tips

- Fertilization of trees: Do not fertilize newly planted trees for 2 or 3 years unless planted in unusually infertile soil. Fertilize established trees only once every 1 or 2 years. If you plan to fertilize this fall, apply 12-12-12 evenly around the spread of the tree at a rate of 15-20 pounds per 1000 square feet of ground. You can also apply the same amount in holes bored 12 inches deep every three feet in a circle around tree. You do this as soon as the leaves have dropped.

- Start an amaryllis early in this month so that it will bloom for the holidays.

- Broadleaf weeds in the lawn are the easiest to kill at this time.

- Keep a notebook of what worked and what didn't this year. Taking pictures also helps. I always think I will remember, but I never do.
