Types of Ornamental Grasses

Feather Reed Grass
Calamagrostis acutiflora

Zone: 5-9

Height: 3-5 feet

Feather Reed Grass is a very vertical, clump forming grass. Both leaves and flowers stand strictly upright giving it a neat, vertical line. Feather Reed Grass is often used around water gardens and in naturalized areas that tend to flood on occasion. Flowering occurs in June and July with a compact, upright, narrow, white to reddish-white inflorescence. In the autumn the flowers change to a buff color and are retained throughout the winter. The plant is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions from sun to light shade. In dry sites, the plant tends to be smaller. Cultivars to look for include 'Brachytricha' early fall bloom, 'Karl Foerster' very architectural, and 'Overdam' white-edged foliage.
