Are You Emergency-Ready?
Disasters can strike at any time. People who live near rivers know
about flooding. A chemical spill along a highway can force evacuations.
And, tornadoes are all too common in Illinois. Is your family prepared
for a disaster?
One thing you can do is put together a disaster kit. A covered
trash can or storage container works well for a home kit. Keep items
that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy-to-carry
container like a duffel bag or backpack.
There are six basics you should stock for your home: water; food;
first aid supplies; clothing and bedding; tools and emergency supplies;
and personal and sanitary supplies.
Store at least a three-day supply of food and water per person.
Store water in clean, plastic bottles or jugs. Allow for one gallon
of water per person per day (two quarts for drinking and
two quarts for each person in your household for food preparation/sanitation).
Food items should include non-perishables like ready-to-eat canned
meats, fruits and vegetables. Also include a non-electric can opener.
