Bright Ideas

Sometimes children who are being raised by grandparents or other relatives feel like their parents have abandoned them. One way to help children deal with these emotions is to talk about their feelings in the "third person." For instance, you might say, "It must be hard for a boy your age not to get to see his mom." Another example is, "What kinds of things does a girl worry about when her mom can’t take care of her?"

Talking about feelings in the third person may help children put their emotions into words. Share tips that have worked for you with other grandparents. Only the idea, not your name, will be published. Send your ideas to:
