July, August and September are all big months for vegetables and fruits in Illinois. Illinois growers produce a myriad of fresh vegetables and fruits including peaches, strawberries, apples, pumpkins, tomatoes, greens, zucchini, beans and peppers.

U-Pick Farms, Roadside Markets and Farmers’ Markets provide an accessible selection of fresh vegetables and fruits throughout the summer and fall.

Going to a U-Pick Farm can be a pleasant and educational family experience. The following tips will help to make that experience a great one!

  • Be sure to call ahead to the U-Pick Farm or Roadside Market to confirm or ask directions; availability of crops and hours of operation.

  • Check to be sure children are welcome. Do not bring pets!

  • Ask if containers are available; if not bring your own.

  • Wear grubby clothes and shoes. It may be muddy!

  • Be sure to bring sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.

  • Do not expect the vendor to provide change for $50 or $100 bills. Bring plenty of smaller bills and change.

  • Make it a family outing and bring along a picnic lunch.

Take advantage of the accessibility and availability of fresh Illinois vegetables and fruits before the growing season ends!
