Fertilization
In order to maintain container gardens at their peak of quality, not only is proper watering essential but also proper fertilization.
Nutrients are readily leached from the soil due to frequent watering. These nutrients need to be replaced. This is especially critical when using a soilless mix.
Liquid fertilizers are a convenient way to supply needed nutrients. The liquid concentrate or dry powder is mixed with water, and the fertilizer application can be made at the same time the plant is watered.
A good rule of thumb suggests using a dilute nutrient solution and fertilize every other watering.
Another popular way to fertilize containers is to use timed-released fertilizers. These are sold under a variety of trade names and look like tiny beads. They work by releasing nutrients each time water is applied. They are available to provide feeding over different periods of time such as three months, six months, or one year. The three-month formulation is generally sufficient for containers. They are generally applied to the surface of the soil in an amount that is dependent on the size of the container.
