Fun, Responsibility and Gardening

As spring approaches now is a great time to think about planning and planting a family garden. Gardens are a great way to involve the whole family, from the selection of seeds and plants to be planted, to the actual planting, watering, weeding and harvesting of the garden. Preparing and caring for a garden can also help your child understand how things grow and what is essential to make a garden grow. By either visiting a gardening section of a retail store, or by reviewing a gardening catalog take a moment to have your child select some plants or seeds they would like in the garden.

By allowing your child to help you plan what will be grown they will gain ownership of the garden. They will also be more interested in caring for the garden as well as harvesting the end results. Remember gardens can include annuals and/or perennials, and can be vegetables: fruits and/or flowers… the choices are yours!

When planting the garden have your child be an active participant in the planting. Let them till the soil with a hoe, help you plant the seeds, bulbs, or plants, as well as water and weed the garden. All of these tasks will help them to understand what it takes to grow a garden. If dry weather is in the forecast have your child help you water the garden during the evening hours. When weeds are evident work together to hoe and pull out these unwanted guests.

Some of the greatest pleasures you and your child will receive will be the joys of the first garden harvest. Whether it is a flower, or peas, or perhaps the worlds largest zucchini, your child will have great pride in knowing they helped to grow this beautiful product.
