Apple Journals — Informational Writing

Include 5 to 10 blank pages inside an apple shaped book for each student. Have them draw/write in their journals whenever new information is learned, discussed or researched. Time should be given periodically for students to share their journal entries with their friends and teacher.

Apples Make Us Think Of…

To develop a cluster of apple words, ask students, "What do you think of when you hear the word apples?" Record their responses on chart paper.

An Apple Web

Have students organize apple information by involving them in a webbing activity. Draw an apple on the board or chart paper and label it with specific topics related to apples. Record student responses under each topic heading. The web could be used to generate ideas for informational writing in journals, class books or at a writing center.

Apple Drawing / WritingCenter

Construct several books with blank pages for the class to share. Provide a variety of drawing and writing tools. Have students work in small groups to draw and write about their apple knowledge in one of the class books. When completed, the books could be placed in the classroom library as new reading material.

Apple Puppets

Give each student materials to make a favorite colored apple to glue onto the bottom fold of a closed paper bag. Have students work in pairs or small groups and speak through their puppets to share apple knowledge.

Data Retrieval Chart

Label a large chart with several apple categories, such as Apple Products, Kinds of Apples, Places Grown, Apple Tastes, and Apple Nutrients. Each student researches and draws or writes about a specific topic of choice on a separate piece of paper. Each entry is then glued beside the appropriate topic headings.

Apple Stitcheriesm

Give each student a 9"x 9" piece of burlap on which to draw an apple with a piece of white chalk. After sewing directions are given, each student selects a plastic needle threaded with red, green or gold yarn. The apple shape is sewn using a running stitch. Plastic needles with brown and green yarn can be used to sew on the stem and leaves.

Map of Apple-Growing States

Mix up a salt/flour/water mixture for students to use in molding a map which shows the apple growing states. Paper apples could be attached to the map to designate these states.
